Chapter 5

Buffy

“At a certain point, I just need to decide that I’m done,” I say to Jinxy as I examine the formal sitting room. It practically sparkles from my efforts, just waiting for the start of the Haunted Ball in a few hours. I look down at the carpet as Jinxy grumbles at me and rolls his eyes.

“Oh, shit,” I mutter. A rolled-up rug, meant to protect the pristine parquet floor, is propped against the wall near the door. I need a second set of hands to move the settee, help me carry the rug over, lay it down, and move the settee back into place.

Once I get this done, I can go home, get into my costume, meet up with Emmy, and then it will be time to party. I spent the day working at a dead sprint, counting down the hours. Now, I’m stuck dealing with this stupid rug, and it isn’t like I can go bug one of the wait staff to help me.

“Need some help?” a deep voice rumbles next to my ear.

I shriek, wheeling around to find Bram standing there, full lips twitching in a sexy grin.

“Again, Bram,” I pant. “How many times are we going to do this?”

He shrugs his broad shoulders, still smiling. For once, he’s wearing casual clothes, I notice. And they really suit him. The short-sleeved t-shirt exposes his muscled forearms and thick biceps, and his tattoos peek out just beyond the sleeve. The thin cotton hangs over his strong chest and flat belly. I can’t wait for him to turn around so I can check out his ass in those worn blue jeans.

Not that I haven’t already had a handful of those buns. After I (almost) got into his pants in the Vampire’s Lair the other day, I went home and cried when I realized that my vibrator was dead and there were no batteries in the house. But I made it work—I’m good with my hands, after all—but nothing is going to scratch the itch like Bram. I sigh as I remember the feel of his enormous erection as I ground against it with my—

“Are you all done for the day?” Bram’s voice interrupts my thoughts.

“Me? Oh, not quite.” I sweep a hand toward the rug. “I need to get that rug under the settee and I could use a hand. Do you mind?”

Bram is already striding toward the settee, giving me the peek at his jeans-clad ass that I’d been longing for. Oh, nice. He bends over, and his biceps flex as he picks up one side of the settee. Very nice.

“Buffy?” he says. “Can you grab the other side?”

“Oh shit, the other side! Right.” I hurry over to the other arm and together, we pick up the delicate piece and carry it to the far wall.

“You were checking out my ass, weren’t you?” He flashes me a lopsided grin that makes my heart stutter.

“I absolutely was,” I say solemnly. “And I’ll do it again.”

“Don’t feel bad,” he grunts as he hefts the rolled-up rug over one shoulder.
